Home: Fairlie. Gateway to the Mackenzie

Fairlie's southern entrance awash in Autumn colours.

Fairlie New Zealand

Officially recognised as "The Gateway to the Mackenzie", Fairlie has a history as a town with an orientation towards farming and the supply of necessities to settlements and villages in the upper Mackenzie.
The local heritage museum contains a wonderful archive of the industrial farming equipment pioneers used in development of the area, including examples of the horse drawn and steam driven farm machinery once used in the area.

Today's Fairlie has maintained its rural emphasis, but has expanded to embrace tourism and a number of niche businesses that have begun in the area.
One of Fairlie's greatest assets is its community. Many of the town's facilities are of a standard beyond that of similar sized populations and have only been made possible through the vision and voluntary labour from those within the community.

Fairlie is the closest town to the Mt Dobson and Fox Peak Ski Areas and the town's ski shop, accommodation and restaurants cater for the skiing and boarding community during the ski season.

The man made Lake Opuha was recently constructed close to the town. In addition to its role as an irrigation reservoir and small hydro generator, the lake provides locals with great fishing and water recreation facilities with a wonderful scenic back drop consisting of the Two Thumb mountain range.
Accommodation is available in various forms, both within the township and the surrounding countryside.
Hotels, motels, lodges, bed and breakfasts, farm 'home-stays' and a motor camp exist in, or in close proximity to, Fairlie.
